Hey From Within – In-Person Art Psychotherapy Policy for Children & Young People

Information for parents, carers, children, and teens attending art therapy

1. Welcome Thank you for choosing Hey From Within for art therapy.

This guide explains how in-person sessions work for children and young people, so both you and your child feel prepared, safe, and comfortable when coming to the studio. My aim is to create a warm, calm, and creative space where your child can explore their thoughts and feelings in their own way.

2. What Is Art Therapy?

Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses art-making and talking to help children and young people express themselves. Your child does not need to be “good at art” the focus is on expression, not skill.

Art-making can help children:

• explore feelings safely

• communicate things that are hard to say

• build confidence

• feel more settled and understood

Every child works at their own pace.

3. Where Sessions Take Place

Sessions are held in my private home studio, a quiet and dedicated therapy room.

• There are stairs leading to the space

• Parking is available on Thornden Road

• Buses run along Oldham Road

• The nearest tram stops are Holt Town (20 mins) or Monsall (19 mins)

• A toilet is available on site

If your child has any access needs or sensory needs, please let me know. I will do my best to make the space comfortable for them.

Your child may use:

• pencils, colouring pencils, felt-tips

6. Artwork Storage

All artwork created in therapy is stored safely and confidentially in the studio. This helps your child’s creative process stay contained and allows us to return to the work when needed. During the last session, your child may take their artwork home if they wish.

7. Confidentiality (Explained Simply)

Your child’s sessions are private and confidential, meaning:

• What they share with me stays between your child and myself

• Updates to parents are agreed with the young person where appropriate

• I do not share session content unless there is a concern about the young person’s safety or safety of someone else, or something unlawful has taken place.

I follow professional safeguarding guidelines. If I am ever worried about your child being in danger, I will talk to you (and them) about what needs to happen next to keep them safe.

For more details, you can read my Data Policy.

Hey From Within – Online Art Psychotherapy for Adults Policy

Introduction

This policy outlines how online art psychotherapy sessions are offered at Hey From Within.
It provides information on how sessions are conducted, practical requirements, payment, confidentiality, and professional boundaries.
The intention is to support a safe, ethical, and creative therapeutic experience for every client engaging in online therapy.

1. Therapeutic Approach

Online art psychotherapy provides a space to explore thoughts, feelings, and experiences through both talking and creative art-making. Sessions are collaborative and person-centred, focusing on your unique needs and pace.
No artistic experience is required — art is used as a form of expression, reflection, and communication.

2. Session Platform & Technical Requirements

  • Online sessions are held via Microsoft Teams, a secure video platform compliant with data protection standards.

  • You will need:

    • A device with camera, microphone, and speakers or headphones.

    • A stable internet connection in line with Microsoft’s recommendations.

    • Optionally, a second webcam to show your art-making area if you wish.

If your connection drops, please try reconnecting. If we are unable to re-establish the call, we will explore secure alternatives, such as a phone call or another encrypted video platform for that session.

3. Session Structure and Length

  • Sessions are 60 minutes long and generally follow this rhythm:

    1. Check-in

    2. Art-making

    3. Reflection and discussion

    4. Bringing the session to a close

The balance between these stages may vary depending on your needs, energy, and therapeutic aims.

4. Preparing for Sessions

To create a safe and effective therapeutic space:

  • Choose a quiet, private room where you feel comfortable and won’t be interrupted.

  • Ensure good lighting and minimise background noise.

  • Have your art materials prepared and within easy reach before the session begins.

5. Art Materials

You are encouraged to use materials that feel most suitable for you. Common options include:

  • Pencils, colouring pencils, pens

  • Watercolours, paintbrushes, basic paint sets

  • Pastels, crayons

  • Clay or playdough

  • A variety of papers or sketchbooks

You can find recommendations and links on the Resources Page.

Clients are asked to supply their own materials. At times, new materials may be suggested as part of your therapeutic process. This can be a meaningful aspect of growth, and we will introduce these at a pace that feels safely challenging and supportive.

6. Storing Artwork

Your artwork is part of your therapy and considered confidential and personal.
Please keep your artwork in a folder, file, or box, stored privately between sessions. This boundary protects your privacy and helps to hold the emotional meaning of the work until we revisit it together in future sessions.

7. Confidentiality and Data Protection

All sessions are confidential within professional and legal limits.
Information shared is treated respectfully and stored securely.
For full details, please see my Data Policy.
Confidentiality may only be broken if there is a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, or if required by law.

8. Fees and Payment

  • Payment method: via bank transfer before each session

  • Reduced rates are available for students and trainees. Please enquire when booking.

9. Cancellations and Missed Sessions

  • Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be charged in full.

  • Repeated missed sessions may lead to review of ongoing booking arrangements.

Endings are an integral and valuable part of the therapeutic process.
